The National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines (RICE) requires testing and monitoring of engines to reduce emissions of toxic air pollutants. Here are some of the requirements for RICE NESHAP testing:
- Pre- and post-installation: Test emissions before and after adding a catalyst system
- Periodic re-testing: Depending on the engine size and source classification, re-testing may be required every 8,760 hours or every 3 years
- Test runs: Each performance test must include three separate test runs, each lasting at least 1 hour
- Notifications: The EPA requires a 60 day notification for RICE/NESHAP testing
- Test report: The EPA requires a report to be submitted no later than 60 days after the test
The NESHAP regulations for stationary engines are published in Title 40, Part 63, Subpart ZZZZ (63.6580) of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
